Mongolia : The Land of Wild Beauty
Mongolia is our home; a land of wild beauty in the heart of Asia said to be a heaven of mountains and water. The mountains are rocky and bare with blowing winds and high peaks eternally capped with snow. There is a fierce flow of mountain streams into vast rivers rippling across the steppe balanced by the calming serenity of large lakes. Across the countryside are sand dunes, canyons and some of the roughest terrain on earth. The dry and vast Gobi Desert, a symbol of Mongolia, stretches across the bottom of the country.
Mongolia's Harsh Climate
There's no question that Mongolia's climate is extreme, with long cold winters and short summers during which most of its precipitation falls. Temperatures drop as low as -40° C in the winter and rocket up to +40° C in the summer.
A Nomadic Lifestyle Creates a Unique Ecosystem
The nomadic lifestyle has a long history in Mongolia, dating back some 3,000 years. The people of the steppes adopted a pastoral way of living that involves continuously moving in search of the best campsites and pastures for their animals. This helps create and maintain an ecological balance. Following livestock across a vast amount of land is far more sustainable and cost effective than keeping a farmstead. This environmentally friendly lifestyle many Mongolian herders still lead today allows natural resources to replenish themselves.
